I think it’s just a terminology thing. The terminology kinda sucks because AV, SDC, Diverless, etc, are basically all synonyms even though they wouldn’t really seem to be. I guess they just got conflated over time.
Anyway, arguing the meaning of “driverless” is really unnecessary because the SAE has defined automation levels to solve exactly this problem. They clearly describe the capabilities of the vehicle and the involvement of the driver.
So really it’s more like, “Why are they calling this Level 2 car a Level 3 car?”
