Although the little SUV shares its underpinnings with the 208, it’s offered with a more powerful petrol engine. It also comes as an EV.
Peugeot has revealed its latest, littlest SUV and in both internal-combustion and pure-electric form.
Externally, the new 2008 shares its core DNA with the 208 revealed in February. It has the same three-stripe light signature up front, with the same LED streaks extending into the bumper, jewel-like grille detailing and model badge at the front of the bonnet.
Down back, it borrows heavily from the 3008 and 5008, with the same lighting signature and gloss-black strip across the boot, but the whole design looks a bit more compressed and aggressive. Gone is the 208’s rounded window line, replaced with a more angular design in keeping with the sharply-styled body.
Under the skin is a version of the Peugeot-Citroen Common Modular Platform (CMP), which in the 208 helps shave 100kg compared to the outgoing model. It also allows for a pure-electric version of the 2008, dubbed (inventively) the e-2008.
It’s powered by a 100kW electric motor on the front axle, fed by a 50kWh battery pack good for 310km on the WLTP combined cycle. That’s down 30km on the hatchback’s claim. Thanks to 100kW DC fast charging, owners will be able to charge to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes at public high-speed charge stations.
Those who don’t want an EV will be able to opt for a turbocharged petrol engine in 75kW, 97kW and 115kW guises. The entry engine will be available with a six-speed manual, the mid-spec with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic, and the range-topper exclusively with an eight-speed self-shifter.
A 75kW diesel engine will also be offered in Europe, mated exclusively to a six-speed manual.
Inside, the 2008 matches the 208 almost exactly. That means it has the latest take on Peugeot’s iCockpit layout, along with the same semi-luxe detailing rolling out across the range. Quilted seats, jewel-like detailing and a range of interesting materials feature, while Peugeot promises there’s also plenty of storage options.
On the active safety front, the 2008 will be available with the full range of semi-autonomous aids. It’ll get adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, full parking assist, autonomous-emergency braking, traffic sign monitoring, blind-spot monitoring and driver attention monitoring.
“The all-new 2008 is currently being studied for Australian introduction; with drivetrains, specification and timings yet to be confirmed,” Peugeot said in a statement.
