BangShift Question Of The Day: The Mid-Engined C8 Corvette…Are You Ready?

I want to start today’s Question of the Day with my own question: do you miss the days when there wasn’t sight or sound of the upcoming new model until the day the dealerships covered the windows around September? I would love for those days to come back, because put bluntly, the C8 Corvette is the worst-kept secret to roam around Detroit in years. Four years ago, it was a mix of C7 Corvette, Holden Ute bodywork, and a big freaking wing at the end of the “bed”. For the last bit of time it’s been heavily camouflaged mules that have done everything from ripping around tracks at night with a V6 soundtrack playing (!) to stalling out and breaking down at gas stations. There have been tons upon tons of mule sightings and we…haven’t said much, really. Why? One, until GM put out the word just about every bit of it was as real as a unicorn handing me a stack of crisp $100 bills, and two…we can’t afford to pay pro spy photographers for the rights to their pictures. Damn the luck.

That’s all changed. GM themselves have finally confirmed that the car is coming. They’ve given a date: July 18th, 2019. They’ve even provided a silent film showing the car in action in New York, with Tadge Juechter driving Mary Barra around. The “silent film” part of this actually is a bit bothersome, because it does make me wonder if that V6 noise wasn’t all about a racing-only program. Remember, until it’s announced properly, it’s all speculation on the best of circumstances. But the car is confirmed: the mid-engined Corvette is on the way. Do you care? Does this satisfy a part of you that has hoped that GM would figure out how to undercut Europeans at their own games? Does losing the front-engine, rear-drive layout piss you off to no end? What are your thoughts?
